Study Skills Program

About Study Skills Program

Some children and adolescents unfortunately face additional challenges as well as having to deal with the day-to-day school environment. Students may encounter problems with time management, focusing of attention on tasks, concentration and organisation of work. These problems put them at a disadvantage when compared to other students. They have a negative impact on successful schooling, sound study patterns and ultimately academic performance.

Children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) are especially prone to the problems above. The BrainWave Centre can help students by providing individualised training in study skills. The Centre targets and manages problems particularly associated with ADD/ADHD.

Areas covered in this program include:

  • Examination techniques
  • Time management
  • Study strategies
  • Listening and note taking
  • Homework
  • Memorisation
  • Reading comprehension
  • Organisation

The program consists of five sessions to be carried out over five weeks. Sessions are run by our psychologists.

Week 1 - Session for student and their parent(s). Conducted by the psychologist (60 mins).

Week 2-5 - Sessions for student only- these sessions are conducted by the technician or psychologist (45mins).

Program Procedure

Following is a description of the procedure undertaken in the Study Skills Program at the BrainWave Centre.

  1. The student is advised to arrive at the Diagnostic and Treatment Centre at least 10 minutes before their appointment time, notifying the receptionist of his/her arrival.
  2. When one of our psychologists is ready to start, they will call the patient into the sound proof testing room and begin the session.
The Study Skills Program offered by the BrainWave Centre is an individualised program which provides:
    - Information about how ADHD affects school performance.
    - Identification of general or specific school or learning problems associated with ADHD.
    - Development of strategies to help address these problems.
    - Provides assistance for children and adolescents to implement these strategies as part of their school experience and home study regime.
  3. The duration of each visit is approximately 60 minutes.

Results

Our Achievement Testing Reports provide parents with an analysis of the child's performance and details about the school/learning environment and school experience both before and after the completion of the program.

Follow Up

Progress is monitored on the implementation of the strategies introduced in the Study Skills Program. The psychologists will check on academic performance in the key learning areas of reading, spelling and mathematics. If a specific learning difficulty persists at school, the psychologist may decide that a full psychometric assessment is required, particularly if this was not carried out prior to the commencement of the Study Skills Program.
