Counselling & CBT

About Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Counselling provides professional assistance in order to address a specific personal issue. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a particular kind of counselling. It works from a cognitive basis to a behaviour or feeling. Progress is achieved through cognitive strategies and working through behaviour patterns. Behaviour therapy helps the patient to develop more positive coping skills for situations that would otherwise be challenging. Research and testimonies reinforce that generalised counselling and Congnitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) are effective in treating a range of difficulties. These include relationship problems, self-esteem concerns, stress, anxiety, depression and phobias in addition to conduct or behavioural problems in the work, home or social environment. At the BrainWave Centre, we provide individual, couple and family counselling.

Counselling Procedure

The following is a description of the procedure a patient undergoes for Counselling and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at the BrainWave Centre.

  1. The patient is advised to arrive at the Diagnostic and Treatment Centre at least 10 minutes before their appointment time, notifying the receptionist of his/her arrival.
  2. When one of our psychologists is ready to start, they will call the patient into the sound proof testing room and begin the session.
  3. Patients progress by working through behaviour therapy and cognitive strategies. Cognitive therapy teaches the patient how certain thinking patterns may produce their symptoms. Their thoughts produce a distorted picture of what's going on in their lives. Behavioural therapy teaches the patient how to calm their mind and body, so they can feel better, think more clearly and make better decisions.
  4. The patient is then free to leave. The duration of the entire appointment is approximately 30 or 50 minutes

Follow Up

Treatment in the form of counselling is generally held in sessions over a set period of time. However, on occasions one consultation may be sufficient. Counselling and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is conducted by one of our psychologists. The psychologist can assess progress and identify any need for further sessions of therapy or counselling.
